Colour Crusaders: Cass Danson

Exciting news! We're thrilled to introduce "Colour Crusaders" – a blog series celebrating like-minded creatives and their homes.

Kicking off this exciting series is none other than one of our favorite home and lifestyle bloggers, Cass Danson from @our.home.le.fleur. With a headline act like Cass, we promise this series will be anything but beige.

Cass has been on a mission to transform her blank canvas home into a vibrant wonderland, one wall at a time. Along the way, she's discovered a newfound passion for painting murals and designing decals, particularly for children's bedrooms. We recently caught up with Cass to learn more about her journey and her newfound love for creating art.

Meet Cass Danson!

Hi Cass, can you tell us a little bit more about yourself. Have you always worked in creative industries? What influenced your decision to peruse a career in art?

Hey V! So, first off, I'm a mum to two awesome kids, Charlie and Lola. I work as a photographer, mostly focusing on product and interior shots, but I also enjoy doing portraits. Interestingly, I didn't always work in creative fields; I used to be in optics. It was only when I had my first child, Lola, and stepped back from full-time work that I started exploring my creative side.

I guess my other creative paths led me to dive into art. Maybe I didn't realize my potential until I began doodling on the walls of my own home and thought, "Hey, this looks cute, and I might actually be good at this!"

If your artworks could throw a party, what kind of party would it be and who would be invited?

If my artworks could throw a party, it would be a vibrant and eclectic bash, filled with bold colors, lively florals, and a nod to the '90s. Picture the energetic atmosphere of Keith Haring, the pop art flair of Andy Warhol, and the vivid creativity of Ken Done, (my fav artists). The guest list would anyone who loves art, food and a fun time! Now, imagine a feast with a '90s-themed menu, serving up all those nostalgic treats. And for the dress code? It's simple – dress the rainbow!

Do you ever high-five your-self when you come up with a great idea? What’s been your favourite “high-five moment” so far?

This question is a fave because I totally do this. My recent top high-five moment has to be the mural I painted in the kids' playroom. The idea hit me, and true to Cass style, I set up and painted it the very same day. When I finished, that high-five moment hit me hard. Like, "This is pretty darn cool! Go, you!"

What inspired you to focus on decals specifically for kids’ spaces?

The wall mural I crafted in Lola's room inspired me to focus on decals. I had no idea how much people would love it until I posted it and started getting messages asking if I could recreate the same mural in other kids' rooms. While I'd love to do that, it wasn't feasible with a newborn and a 3-year-old in tow. Erica from Foreshore Folk was actually the first person to suggest turning the mural into decals, and she connected me with an amazing printer. I think she really gave me the little push I needed to give it a shot. Once I made my first batch of decals, I realized I could now create all the funky decals I'd always wanted but couldn't find. Since then, the ideas haven't stopped flowing!

How do you believe art in a child’s environment can impact their development and imagination?

Art in my kids spaces is super important to me. Fun and colorful pieces not only excite kids but also inspire their creativity. Lola's love for art and creating is probably a mix of her surroundings and, who knows, maybe a bit of genetics too. We proudly showcase her own masterpieces throughout our home, especially in her playroom. It's a constant display to keep that creative spark alive and encourage her to keep on creating.

Can you share some tips for bringing colour into the home?

There are many ways to bring color to your home, and here are some of my favorites:

Paint: Adding a fun-coloured feature wall can really make a space pop.

Colourful furniture: Instead of opting for a grey couch, choose a vibrant colour to brighten up the space. Even just a pop of colour with a bright armchair can make a difference.

Artworks are always a good choice for adding colour to your home.

Funky homewares: If you don't want to go all out but still want a pop of colour, consider bedding, couch cushions, and throws in a fun, bright pattern to achieve that desired colourful effect.
